Article Highlights

  • There is a push by battery makers and EV manufacturers to source cobalt from locations outside of the DRC because of the use of child labour in the artisan mining there. Canadian cobalt is therefore favoured by them over DRC cobalt. Canada is viewed not only as a safe jurisdiction but also "conflict-free" as new mining here does not go ahead without indigenous First Nation approval.
  • The Re-2Ox process is not only environmentally compliant due to no discharge into the air or water but also is very energy efficient in that it doesn't use burning or smelting like major mining companies do in the production of clean cobalt, and the company is meeting the world's goal of clean energy because it is located in northern Ontario where hydropower is the source of electricity and is world recognized as being among the best for the environment.
  • The mining area Castle is located in (known as the Cobalt Camp) produced more than 600 million ounces of silver and more than 30 million pounds of cobalt in the past and many geologists believe it can do so again. As CCW has proven with its exploration and discoveries, there is a lot of metal left behind by past miners.

Silver and cobalt, two unassuming elements, are quietly shaping the future of technology and sustainability across a range of industries. Beyond their traditional roles in jewelry and coinage, these metals have found new life as indispensable components in modern innovations, from electric vehicles (EVs) to renewable energy sources.

Silver Is Widely Needed In Tomorrow’s World

Silver stands out as the premier electrical conductor, playing a pivotal role across various industries, especially those shaping the future. Its applications extend beyond traditional uses like jewelry and coinage; today, silver finds versatile utility. It emerges as a vital component in a range of green technologies, spanning from electric vehicles and 5G infrastructure to solar panels and cutting-edge electronic devices, even influencing medical advancements. Silver has unequivocally emerged as the precious metal of the modern era.

In the quest for sustainable energy solutions, all forms of non-fossil energy production necessitate efficient storage mechanisms. Should the surge in electric vehicle adoption align with governmental investments in EV infrastructure, we can anticipate a heightened demand for silver. In a projection from 2018, the International Energy Agency envisages a future where 125 million EVs populate the roads by 2030.

The exceptional electrical properties of silver render it irreplaceable in numerous EV applications, where safety and environmental considerations take precedence. Moreover, silver's versatile applications extend to various sectors, encompassing solar infrastructure, electronic devices, jewelry, and beyond.

The Importance Of Cobalt In The Industry

Despite cobalt being mined around the world, some of the largest producers are located in politically unstable areas. In fact, a full 80% of the world’s cobalt is buried under the ground in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mineral is in hot demand because it is essential in the batteries used in electric vehicles and electronic devices. Similar to other industrial materials, the cobalt market is sizable. Although exact numbers are hard to pin down, it is expected that the global market for cobalt will reach around $20 billion annually by the end of this decade.

As reported by IEA, global cobalt demand is still in its infancy, with forecasted use increasing from 140 kilo tons per year in 2020, to over 660 kilo tons per year by 2040. With aggressive sustainable development goals being executed worldwide, cobalt will play a crucial role in the modernizing of our infrastructure and economy.

Cobalt is a critical element in the cathode of lithium-ion batteries, enhancing their stability, energy density, and overall performance. With the rapid growth of the EV industry and the increasing need for energy storage solutions, the demand for cobalt is expected to rise significantly in the coming years.

Canada Silver Cobalt Works recognizes the immense potential of cobalt and is strategically positioned to contribute to the supply chain of this essential metal. CCW recently met with Summinto in Japan to discuss their requirements for cobalt sulfate and spec requirements for EV metals in general. Sumitomo is a legendary 400 year old metal trader that supplies battery metals for Panasonic batteries -used in Teslas.

How Canada Silver Cobalt Works Stands Out

Castle East

Exceptionally high-grade native silver deposits, reaching up to 89,853 g/t (2,621 oz/ton), were discovered through surface drilling at the Castle East Robinson Zone, situated less than 2 km east of the Castle Mine shafts.

The Company unveiled the first ever 43-101 resource estimate for the region, revealing a substantial 7.56 million ounces of silver in inferred resources at a grade of 252 ounces per tonne of silver. The highest silver grade resource in the world.

The company has been actively exploring and developing the Castle Mine, with a focus on modernizing the infrastructure and implementing innovative mining techniques. Through its underground drilling programs, Canada Silver Cobalt Works aims to expand the resource base and optimize the extraction of cobalt and other valuable metals.

Base Metal Portfolio

In addition to this exceptional discovery, Canada Silver Cobalt Works Inc. boasts a portfolio that includes 14 battery metals properties in Northern Quebec. Furthermore, Canada Silver Cobalt Works Inc. possesses the promising 1,000-hectare Eby-Otto gold property, strategically located in close proximity to Agnico Eagle's high-grade Macassa Mine near Kirkland Lake, Ontario, where active exploration is underway. In a strategic move, the company also holds a lithium property spanning 230 square kilometres, primarily focused on greenfield exploration ground situated along a significant volcanic sedimentary rock - Archean granite contact near Cochrane, Ontario, and contiguous to Power Metals' Case Lake Lithium properties.

The Re-2OX Process

This innovative hydrometallurgical technology allows for the efficient extraction of cobalt and other metals from various feed sources, including mine tailings.

  • Recovering 99% of cobalt from Castle gravity concentrates
  • Removing 99% of arsenic from Castle gravity concentrates

Produced on spec industry-grade 22.6% cobalt sulphate for electric vehicle batteries for the Asian battery manufacturers.

The Re-2OX process not only provides economic benefits but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the environmental footprint associated with traditional refining processes with a carbon-neutral footprint.

Canada Silver Cobalt Works' flagship assets, the silver-cobalt Castle Mine and the expansive 7800 hectare   Castle Property, present substantial exploration potential for not only silver and cobalt but also nickel, gold, and copper. With the advantage of underground access at the fully owned Castle Mine, impressive multiple high-grade silver discoveries at Castle East, a pilot plant for cobalt-rich gravity concentrate production, a state-of-the-art processing facility (TTL Laboratories) located in the town of Cobalt, and the possession of a proprietary hydrometallurgical process known as Re-2Ox, designed for the production of technical-grade cobalt sulphate as well as nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) formulations, Canada Silver Cobalt Works Inc. is strategically poised to assume a prominent role as a Canadian leader in the silver-cobalt sector.
